Cosmetic surgery has never been a more glamorous affair. Basking in the limelight of celebrity endorsements and glitzy advertisements of women showing off their trim and toned figure, cosmetic procedures seem to be a quick fix to looking good. As the number of cosmetic procedures performed surge, the need to highlight the dangers of liposuction and its counterparts has never been more urgent.

A statistical census done by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery showed that 10.2 million patients underwent cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures in 2008. While the top procedure that was performed was breast augmentation, liposuction came a close second. This position was reflected in the rankings of women as more of them went under the knife to have their chest enlarged. For men, however, liposuction remained the top procedure that was performed on them.

With more surgeons offering liposuction to consumers, there are several pointers that need to be taken into consideration. Beware of cheap liposuction as sometimes the surgeons might not be trained properly. I once read about a case in China were the surgeon performing the act on the patient was actually a first year medical student. Lucky for the patient, nothing severe happened to her-just a long scar that will remind her of this incident.

Do not be too greedy and have more than what you should be removed from you. Some patients think that liposuction is God's gift to them as a solution to weight loss. This mindset needs to be changed because liposuction is certainly not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle and good diet. Liposuction is merely lends a helping hand to those who want a more toned figure since there are pockets of fats that will never be removed no matter how much you exercise or diet.

With median age of patients going down, it is of utmost importance that we start educating the people about liposuction. Do this or we might lose these people to the dark side of mass media.
